The value scale—shades of color from dark to light—is fundamental to all visual arts. Mastering value allows you to create great visual and emotional drama in your artwork. Yet artists often struggle to bring high contrast and intensity to their work. This workshop celebrates the richness and beauty of both dark and light and the power that sits at their intersection. The class will include brief evening walks on campus to practice careful observation of light and darkness as well as classroom exercises and optional assignments designed to expand your ability to “see the light” and “bring the light,” working from dark to light as well as from light to dark. Grow your capacity to render the full value scale and bring more intensity and power to your paintings, drawings and other water-based or dry media. Open to artists at all levels.

Note: Studio art supply lists are shared two weeks prior to each course start date. Please contact cpcoord@rice.edu with questions.
