Effective college counseling requires fundamental and advanced counseling skills, knowledge of adolescent cognitive development, an understanding of the higher education landscape, and familiarity with the undergraduate admissions process and financial aid. This program provides a holistic, core curriculum to teach the critical skills of effective college counseling.

College Affordability: As college access counselors, it is important that we properly advise students on the numerous pathways they have for financing their college educations. To begin, students must understand the basic elements of college affordability including cost of attendance, in-state vs. out-of-state tuition, and private vs. public tuition. Additionally, it is imperative that students understand the importance of academic planning to ensure an on-time four-year graduation. Proper planning saves money in the long run on tuition, decreases the chances of incurring additional undergraduate debt, and allows students more time to earn professional income.

Types of Financial Aid: In Module two, we will explore types of financial aid, who qualifies for this aid and the various sources to access these funds. To begin, let’s discuss some basic financial aid terms to set the stage for this module. There are four types of financial aid: grants, scholarships, loans, and work study.

Financial Aid Application Process: In Module three, we will explore the various financial aid applications and the pre- and post- application processes. The standard financial aid application that is required by most colleges and universities is called the FAFSA, the Free Application for Federal Student Aid, which we will discuss in the next video. It is important to understand who fills out which document when you are advising students on the financial aid process.

Saving for College: In our final module, we will explore ways to reduce college costs prior to starting college and while in college. We will also discuss college savings options for parents that want to prepare for their child’s future as early as possible. There are many different ways that parents and students can contribute to lowering the overall cost of the college experience.
