Whether you are intrigued, perplexed, enthused or disturbed by the capacity of artificial intelligence to generate images from language prompts, programs like DALL-E and Midjourney are profoundly altering the landscape of visual arts. Painter Laura Spector confronts the uncertainties and dualities of generative AI as both deeply problematic and full of potential inspiration for artists. We experiment with generative AI programs, learning to write specific prompts to render a wide range of visual images. Using these images as loose inspiration, each participant then creates a painting on canvas of their own design, by their own hand. Ultimately, this course makes the case that thriving artistically in an age of generative AI requires understanding AI’s capacities and limitations and creating a recognizable body of work with your own compelling, personal “art story.”

Note: This course is designed for students who have taken an introductory painting course or have basic familiarity with color theory, paint mixing and application.
