Celebrate the joy of food in this painting course that draws inspiration from the confections and feasts of Wayne Thiebaud and other artists throughout history. This course is a tribute to the accomplished colorist Thiebaud, who passed away last year at 101. He celebrated cakes, pies, ice-cream sundaes, doughnuts, hot dogs, roasts, and humble peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, among other subjects. Approaching every painting as a beginner, Thiebaud described food as “poetic,” “glorious” and “strangely uncommon.” Students will receive guidance on how to set up a unique still life and create simplified drawings. You will build up to working in traditional acrylic, gouache or oil painting methods using textured mediums to create brightly colored, richly finished paintings. Each student will complete multiple small paintings. This course is designed for students who have taken an introductory painting course or have basic familiarity with color theory, paint mixing and application.
