People have been a favorite subject of artists for thousands of years, and portraiture is one of the oldest artistic genres. Photography is especially well suited for making portraits—from formal portraits to “selfies,” social commentary and photojournalism to high fashion, environmental portraits to formal studies of the face and body. How we look, who we are, our identities in the context of family, culture and history, can all be the subjects of good and insightful portraiture. This course focuses on understanding the world through people—turning your camera toward others to find beauty, meaning and understanding. We explore techniques for capturing subjects, composing and lighting portraits and putting portraits into larger contexts. Students will be encouraged to experiment with a range of portraiture approaches and to continue to develop their photographic style and artistic voice. The course includes a mixture of presentations, discussion and critiques.

Note: Before taking this class, you should complete an introductory photography course and be familiar with basic camera operation and photography principles.
