Immerse yourself in a world of creative possibility with composer, professor and creativity scholar Anthony Brandt, Ph.D., coauthor of “The Runaway Species: How Human Creativity Remakes the World.” This course provides a primer on human creativity, offering insights and practical strategies to enhance creativity across fields. Explore why humans have such great capacity for creativity. Consider the role of evolution, neuroscience and our social relationships in sparking imaginative thought and action. Learn a variety of approaches that may deepen your creative thinking and practice. Investigate how human and AI creativity differ, and explore cutting-edge collaborations of art and science. You are invited to experiment with the strategies explored in this course in an optional, hands-on, out-of-class assignment. The final session will include a discussion and showcase of participants’ creative explorations. No artistic experience is required, and people who do not consider themselves creative are encouraged to take part!

Course Details

Anthony Brandt, Ph.D., is a composer and professor of composition and theory at Rice University’s Shepherd School of Music. His catalogue includes four chamber operas, as well as orchestral, chamber, vocal, theater, dance, and television scores. Dr. Brandt is coauthor with neuroscientist Dr. David Eagleman of “The Runaway Species: How Human Creativity Remakes the World” (2017), which has been published in 14 countries. He is also artistic director of the contemporary music ensemble Musiqa, winner of national awards for adventurous programming. He is currently a co-investigator in several studies involving music, health and creativity, including an NEA Research Lab and a pioneering mobile brain-imaging study in Bali. His research has been published in the Creativity Research Journal, Journal of Creativity, Frontiers in Psychology, Brain Connectivity, and by Oxford University Press and Springer. Dr. Brandt has been awarded Rice University’s Phi Beta Kappa and George R. Brown teaching prizes and a Faculty Award for Excellence in Professional Service and Leadership. He holds a master’s degree from the California Institute of the Arts and a doctoral degree from Harvard University.
