This course provides students with a practical introduction to bankruptcy law and procedure, focusing on the paralegal’s role in assisting attorneys throughout the bankruptcy process. Topics include the structure and function of the bankruptcy court system, eligibility requirements, types of bankruptcy (Chapters 7, 11, and 13), the automatic stay, exemptions, discharge of debts, and creditor rights.
Students will learn how to prepare bankruptcy petitions, schedules, means tests, and other required filings. The course also covers ethical considerations, fraud prevention, and the use of electronic filing systems. Through realistic case studies and practical exercises, students gain the skills needed to support bankruptcy attorneys in both consumer and business filings.

Graduates of the Rice Paralegal Certificate program are eligible for a discounted rate of $399 per course.
