This course features composers from the 18th century to the present day from the United States, Canada, Mexico, Cuba, Brazil, Colombia, Peru, Argentina and other countries. Explore the work, lives and influences of great symphonic composers who have lived or worked in the Americas such as Gustav Mahler, Antonín Dvorák, Aaron Copland, Charles Ives, Leonard Bernstein, Florence Price, John Adams, Jennifer Higdon, Mason Bates, Jessie Montgomery, Carlos Simon, Gabriela Lena Frank, Jimmy López Bellido and Gabriela Ortiz. Discover how North and South American symphonic traditions emerged from European, African American and Indigenous influences to create not one but many uniquely American sounds. No musical experience is required for this accessible, engaging course.

Course Details

Carlos Andrés Botero, M.M., is an orchestra conductor, music education lecturer and consultant with first-level orchestras in Europe and the Americas, including the Frankfurt Radio Symphony, Nashville Symphony, the Xalapa Symphony, Medellin Philharmonic and the Colombian Youth Philharmonic. He is the musical ambassador of the Houston Symphony and artistic director of Sinfónica ISMEV in Mexico. Mr. Botero has a master’s in music from the Escuela Soto-Mesa in Madrid, Spain, and a second master’s in viola performance from Eastern Michigan University. He has taught with the Glasscock School of Continuing Studies since 2016.
