The Behavioral Health Consultant-Certification Course (BHC-CC) is a program designed to improve the gaps in providing and receiving behavioral health consultation services in primary care. Through this course, we strive to train Behavioral Health Consultants (BHC) that are competent in addressing health disparities, improving health equity, and promoting health in vulnerable and historically excluded populations.

The format will consist of a series of synchronous and asynchronous learning sessions including two in-person trainings with standardized patients.

Course Details


 

•    Identify the integral role of a behavioral health consultant within the PCBH model
•    Discuss, identify, and apply interventions to improve teamwork and performance  
•    Describe the effect of health equity and health disparities on health outcomes  
•    Identify and utilize interventions and strategies to facilitate behavior change  
•    Evaluate best treatment plans based on efficacy and expert guidance


Pre-Requisite Introduction to Primary Care, PCBH, and Population Health

Module 1 – Introduction to the Behavioral Health Consultant Role and Competencies  

  • Understand the role of BHC in primary care  
  • Understand the competencies for a BHC
  • Conducting a behavioral Change-focused interview for the context of primary care
  • Billing and Coding for Behavioral health Integration in primary care

Module 2 – Teamwork in Primary Care

  • Understand the roles of the various primary care team members
  • Identify and apply interventions to improve team science and team performance in primary care
  • Identify and apply interventions to improve provider burnout in primary care

Module 3 – Special Topics in Primary Care

  • Understand the impact of Adverse Childhood Experience, Trauma and PTSD in primary care
  • Identify the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on primary care delivery  
  • SBIRT
  • Employ psychopharmacology 101 in primary care

Module 4 – Health Equity and Health Disparities in Primary Care

  • Define Health Equity and Health Disparities
  • Describe the differences between implicit and explicitly bias  
  • Explain the impact of systemic racism on health outcomes  

 Module 5 – Technology in Primary Care  

  • Identify telehealth strategies to facilitate behavioral change  
  • Understand the use of technological devices in the context of primary care
  • Understand legal/ethical implications of telehealth in primary care

In Person Trainings on Standardized Patients: Hosted twice during the course in Houston, TX.

You must be licensed under the following titles to be eligible to apply for this course:  

•    Licensed Clinical Social Workers (LCSWs)
•    Licensed Marriage and Family Therapists (LMFTs)
•    Licensed Professional Counselors (LPCs)
•    Licensed Psychologist

 


 

The estimated Cost of Attendance (COA) is up to $4,000.00

Registrations are considered final as of 10 working days before class starts. No refunds will be issued after these dates and credits will not be given for future classes. No refunds will be granted for participants who miss a portion of a program. Refund requests before the deadline are subject to a 10% processing fee and must be made in writing to gscs@rice.edu. If books have been issued, the cost of the books and any shipping fees will be deducted. Refunds for credit card payments will be processed as credits to the accounts from which they were paid and may not appear as a credit until the following statement. Refunds for enrollments paid by check take up to four weeks to be processed and mailed by the Rice University accounting office. There is a $30 charge for any check returned for insufficient funds.

An individual may be able to claim a tax deduction or a tax credit for the cost of attending this continuing education program. However, we do not issue 1098-Ts. Non-academic credit programs such as continuing education courses do not require a 1098-T per IRS guidelines. Please keep a copy of your receipt and consult with your tax advisor about whether your payment meets the regulations that apply to tax deductions and tax credits.
